Holistic Healing Through Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each unique person, not just the symptoms of disease.

It is a holistic approach to optimal health that can employ many different treatments and preventative check-ups to affect positive, lasting  lifestyle changes.

Health Evaluation

Health Evaluation

During the initial new patient treatment visit, you will be asked detailed questions about your unique symptoms and ailments as well as your health and life goals.  Your lifestyle profile will be compiled based on medical history, emotional well-being, nutritional intake and other lifestyle factors. A thorough physical examination is then performed, which may include a spinal examination, physical observations and/or other diagnostic procedures.

You will be evaluated carefully so that precise solutions to your specific health challenges can be determined. Finally, you will receive a recommended course of treatment, which can vary in frequency, intensity and duration according to your individual needs and preferences. You will also receive a recommended preventative maintenance schedule, quarterly or bi-annual appointments to sustain your health levels.

Nutritional Counseling

Healthy Meal

Food can be good medicine for your body. But the wrong types of foods can be harmful. Nutritional counseling is an integral part of your comprehensive wellness plan. It is important to know that nutrition is different than “dieting.”

Nutritional counseling is a therapeutic approach to help you live an overall healthier lifestyle. It involves assessing various health needs in regard to diet and exercise.

Knowing which foods best support your unique health needs will help you:

  • Manage chronic conditions

  • Facilitate weight loss

  • Develop healthy habits

  • Increase fitness

  • Improve overall wellness

Acupuncture & Acupressure

Acupuncture Session

Acupuncture/acupressure is an ancient Chinese medicine-based approach to treating a variety of conditions by triggering specific points on the skin with needles or pressure. It is a minimally invasive method to stimulate nerve-rich areas of the skin surface to influence tissues, gland, organs, and various functions of the body.

Each acupuncture needle or finger pressure produces a small stimulation at the insertion site, and although it’s slight enough to cause little to no discomfort, it’s enough of a signal to let the body know it needs to respond. This response involves activation of the immune system, promoting circulation to the area, wound healing, and pain modulation.

Acupuncture/acupressure eases many types of pain and works well for chronic conditions such as low back/neck pain, osteoarthritis, tension headaches, migraines, stroke and neurological disorders.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient's mobility, function, and well-being. Physiotherapy provides important support through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention and health and fitness.

Several physiotherapy treatments may be used:

  • Cold Laser Therapy utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue to help eliminate pain, swelling, reduce spasms and speed healing.

  • Infrared heat therapy helps cells regenerate and repair themselves, and exerts an analgesic effect to help reduce or eliminate chronic pains.

  • Soft-tissue therapy relaxes tight muscles, relieves spasm and releases tension in the fascia (the connective tissue that surrounds each muscle).

  • Balance exercises and stretches maintain core strength, mobility, restore range of motion and prevent falls and injury.

Self Care Coaching

Couple Walking

There are many approaches to self care. Your treatment visit may include a discussion of self care modalities best suited to your unique needs. Exercise is a good example. Everyone has different pain and mobility issues. Choosing the best exercise program is key.

Some of the best physical activities for your body don’t require a gym membership or ask you to get fit enough to run a marathon. They can do wonders for your health by helping to keep your weight under control, improve your balance and range of motion, strengthen your bones, protect your joints, prevent bladder control problems, and even ward off memory loss. Walking, biking and swimming, Tai Chi and Qi Gong are all wonderful for our bodies.

Dietary Supplements

Assortment of Pills

Vitamins and minerals are essential substances that our bodies need to develop and function normally. Dietary supplements include these vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, plant materials, as well as other botanicals that can be used to supplement your diet. Supplements come in many forms, including tablets, capsules, powders and liquids.

Many supplements contain ingredients that have strong biological effects, and such products may not be safe in all people. Your health issues and medications will be carefully considered before determining if supplements are necessary, appropriate and safe for you to use.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Medicinal Herb

Chinese herbs are prescribed either as primary therapy or as a complement to treatment. Several diagnostic procedures are performed and your detailed health history is carefully examined. This will include your past and current illnesses, and medication use. Once you have been fully assessed, a custom herbal formula will be made for you.

Chinese herbs may be used to:

  • Decrease cold/flu symptoms

  • Increase your energy

  • Improve your breathing and digestion

  • Improve your sleep

  • Decrease pain

  • Help regulate menopausal symptoms, menstrual cycles for PMS and infertility

Chiropractic

Shoulder Treatment

The chiropractic adjustment restores misaligned spinal vertebrae to improve the spinal nervous system function which affects many neurologic conditions, and restores balance.

In addition, chiropractic adjustments to joints such as wrist, shoulder and ankle restore body alignment and function to relieve pain.
