Goji Berries: A Superfood Powerhouse

Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are small red fruits native to Asia. These vibrant berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and are now recognized globally as a superfood due to their impressive health benefits. You can find them in most grocery stores and Amazon.

How Goji berries can contribute to your health and well-being:

Rich in Nutrients: Goji berries are nutrient-dense, containing high levels of vitamins A and C, essential for immune function and skin health. They also provide a substantial amount of fiber, iron, zinc (restores loss of taste), and antioxidants, particularly carotenoids like beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, which support eye health.

Boosts Immunity: Packed with vitamins A and C, goji berries help strengthen the immune system. These vitamins are crucial for combating and recovering from illnesses (like Covid) and infections. Additionally, the polysaccharides found in goji berries have been shown to enhance the body's ability to fight off pathogens.

Antioxidant Powerhouse: Goji berries are loaded with antioxidants, which protect the body from oxidative stress and free radical damage. This antioxidant capacity is beneficial for overall health, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

Supports Eye Health: The high levels of zeaxanthin in goji berries make them particularly beneficial for eye health. Zeaxanthin protects the eyes from harmful blue light (due to prolonged screen time) and oxidative stress, which can lead to age-related macular degeneration and other vision problems.

Supports Skin Health: The antioxidants and vitamins in goji berries contribute to healthy skin by reducing inflammation and promoting collagen production. This helps maintain skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, leading to a more youthful complexion.

Regulates Blood Sugar: Some studies suggest that goji berries can help regulate blood sugar levels, making them a potentially beneficial food for individuals with diabetes. They may improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels, though more research is needed in this area. (I add goji berries to oatmeal instead of raisins and eat them as a healthy, energy-boosting snack.)

Improves Mood and Energy Levels: Goji berries have been linked to improved mood and energy. They contain adaptogens, which help the body adapt to stress and enhance overall well-being. Regular consumption of goji berries has been associated with increased feelings of calmness and better quality of sleep.

Incorporating goji berries into your diet is easy! They can be eaten raw, dried, or added to smoothies, breakfast grains, and salads. The traditional Chinese way to eat them is in soup. With their myriad of health benefits, goji berries are a delicious and nutritious addition to any diet. With Covid, flu and cold season upon us, this is the perfect time of year to eat goji berries!
