What do fatigue, irritability and poor sleep have in common?
From the Western medicine view, they can be caused by adrenal burn-out. Chinese Medicine attributes all three symptoms to long term depletion of Kidney energy.

The adrenal glands play a central role in how we experience energy. They are often described as the body’s battery or turbocharger, helping us respond to stress, regulate blood sugar, and maintain stamina. When adrenal function is strong, energy feels steady and reliable. When it is strained, fatigue, irritability, poor sleep, and crashes become common.
In Chinese Medicine, adrenal function is closely associated with the Kidney system, which governs foundational energy, resilience, and long-term vitality. Unlike short bursts of adrenaline, Kidney energy is meant to be conserved and replenished over time. Chronic stress, overwork, poor sleep, and inadequate nourishment gradually drain this reserve. Adrenal (kidney) depletion function generally takes at least a year to restore.
Food plays a major role in supporting adrenal and Kidney health. Real, whole foods provide the building blocks the body needs to maintain energy. Goji berries and rosebud tea are traditionally used to nourish and gently support the system. Hydration is equally important – a helpful guideline is to drink roughly half your body weight in ounces of water daily.
Balanced meals matter. The body needs fat, protein, and carbohydrates to regulate stress hormones and blood sugar. Highly processed foods with long shelf lives often lack enzymes and vitality. Fresh, frozen, and even canned whole foods retain more nutritional value.
Enzyme-rich foods, fermented foods, and sour flavors taken with meals can support digestion and improve nutrient absorption. Eating seasonally and locally also helps the body align with its environment – for example, heartier foods like lamb stew and root vegetables in winter and lighter foods like fish in summer.
Lifestyle choices are just as important. Sleep is non-negotiable for adrenal recovery. Simple rituals such as soaking the feet in warm water, keeping a gratitude journal, and getting morning sunlight help regulate circadian rhythm. Gentle movement practices like Qi Gong and Tai Chi build energy without draining it.
