Between 75 and 90 percent of the human body is made up of water. To stay healthy your skin needs moisture. Not drinking enough can lead to dry, thinning skin and even wrinkles. Water helps flush toxins, so moderate dehydration can also lead to constipation. When the body is unable to eliminate waste through its normal channel (the colon), it can seek alternate routes through the skin, causing acne.

I recently treated a patient for lower back pain, and I noticed acne around her chin area. For this particular facial area, lack of water is a key factor that provokes acne. In addition to acupuncture treatment, I recommended drinking 2 to 3 liters of water (4 to 6 16oz. bottles) per day. And although this patient did not originally seek treatment for acne, I could see her back pain decrease, and as an added bonus, her skin started to clear!
For fast and effective ways to boost your water intake and tackle problem skin conditions:
Beat the Heat
Preventing heatstroke can be as simple as staying hydrated. In Summer, when temperatures rise and people are generally more active, drinking water is essential to replace what your body loses through everyday functions. But why are so many people not drinking enough?
I Don't Like the Taste
Add a slice of lemon or lime to your water. Boosts flavor and vitamin C, and from a Chinese medicine perspective sour flavors can balance the sweets in your diet that cause inflammation.
It Runs Right Through Me
Add electrolytes such as Pink Himalayan salt. Electrolytes help your body tissue absorb water more efficiently. A pinch of pink salt avoids extra calories in energy and sport drinks, and helps you hydrate without frequent trips to the restroom. *Added bonus: Pink salt will not raise your blood pressure!
Prevent Dehydration
Water keeps your body temperature normal, lubricates and cushions your joints, and helps get rid of unwanted wastes through bowel movements, urine and sweat. Stay happy, healthy, and hydrated this summer by preventing early signs of dehydration:
· Increased thirst and dry mouth: Drink water before you feel thirsty, and try carrying a bottle around for quick access.
· Dizziness and Fatigue: Be sure to drink water during and after physical activities.
· Decrease in urine, and urine is more concentrated (deep yellow/amber color): Decrease coffee/caffeine intake, causes body to excrete more fluids.
